AfricanColours 2008 Critical Writer's Workshop
The AfricanColours 2008 Critical Writer's Workshop in partnership with the DOEN and HIVOS Foundations, is conducting a writer's workshop for professional writers and journalists in the month of October 2008 in
The workshops which start from the 5th October to the 9th October 2008, will be facilitated by professional art journalist and editor Susan Linnee from Kenya and David Kaiza from Uganda.
Participants will spend five days examining and analyzing the links between images and words.
Through this scheduled workshop, AfricanColours seeks to increase the quality of art journalism and creative writting amongst art writers in Africa. Participants to the workshops include: Ben Bukenya - Uganda, Caroline Kaminju - Johanesburg based writer, Stephen Garananga - Zimbabwe, Maggie Mzumara - Zimbabwe, Joe Pollit - London, John Owoo - Ghana and a number of their counterparts from Kenya.
Possible outcomes of the activity-based workshop include:
-Developing an understanding of the history of art criticism in Africa and internationally and learning to apply this knowledge;
-Developing an appreciation for both text and visual media;
-Developing the knowledge and skills to produce nuanced and intelligent writing on the visual arts.
-Develop the skill to articulate the meaning of particular works of art and in doing so educate the public about significant works of art.
Speakers at the workshop include:
Miriam Kyambi – One of the most notable artists on the East African scene. Her works are represented in dualities; looking at pros and cons, lightness and darkness, the internal and the external, the remembered, the forgotten and things unspoken. Currently working on installation art, Miriam will be talking about her installation works and the Media coverage of the visual art scene in Nairobi.
