The first AfricanColours Gallery Walk for the year 2008

It’s true that a bird at hand is better than two in the bush. But we at AfricanColours thought that keeping the bird at hand and going out to get the other two in the bush is an even better way of experiencing life!

So keeping with a tradition that we started in 2006, we rolled out the fourth GalleryWalk – an art and nature affair to be experienced by lovers of art and nature. It was this past Saturday 5th April, and the art tour took the participants to the new RaMoMa gallery on 2nd Parklands avenue, and on to the world famed Kitengela Glass and finally to the artist Jimna Kimani’s studio.

It was a first time for most at RaMoMa, having only re located from Rahimtullah towers in Nairobi’s Upperhill district last month. Curator James Muriuki was at hand to give a brief history of the RaMoMa and to show participants around the massive facility that is host to several galleries on 1100sq metres.

Kitengela Glass, renowned the world over for Nani, the founder, and for their hand made glass products was the Walk’s out of town destination. Nothing in its fame is an exaggeration. In fact, not all about this place can be said; most of it has to be seen and experienced to be understood.

It was a great opportunity for participants to witness the process of smelting the glass to transforming it into a beautiful flower vase – and not to mention that they also had the opportunity to shop for various items from the Kitengela Glass gift shop.

Jimnah Kimani is a young but obviously very talented painter. The visit to his studio, just a few metres from Kitengela glass, was a real pleasure. To meet the painter in person and to relate his works with him was an opportunity that most participants reveled in.

If you do the same walk again, it might be better to meet at RaMoMa to save time, also it might be more convenient to start a bit later, like at 10 o'clock.
